When we get physically ill, there are signs. We tend to listen to these symptoms and self-diagnose them. We might take some extra rest days, grab over-the-counter medication, or see the doctor to recover. We tend to be good at identifying physical red flags- but often neglect or push our mental red flags!
When we start to feel more negative, unpleasant emotions, more heightened emotions, increased irritability, chronic fatigue, mind fog, decreased motivation, and restlessness = RED FLAG
NOTICE IT and do not NEGLECT it. You might “get over it” but it bites back bigger every time. Rather notice, acknowledge, and give a little more tender love and care, as you would if you were physically (medically) ill. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Treat it as such.
Here are 4 tips to help maintain your mental health:
- Open up about your feelings to a trusted friend. Do not keep things bottled up.
- Make some time to do the things YOU enjoy. It is important.
- Treat yourself like you treat your friend. More kindness, less critical.
- Don’t numb or avoid your feelings; allow temporary discomfort.
